Note: This was an illustration from the book “Vingt Poems” by Luis de Gongora y Argote.  The poet was born in Cordoba in 1561. Interest in his work revived in the 20th century and, on the 300th anniversary of his death, he was hailed by Garcia Lorca as “The father of modern poetry”. Picasso shared he contemporaries admiration for El Greco’s painting and Gongora’s poetry and created 20 etchings to illustrate the book published in 1948.
