Edition: 28/100 (numbered within the image). There were also 2 Trial Proofs, 3 Printers proofs and 10 Artists proofs.
Public Collections: Francois Gilot’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Musee Picasso in Antibes, MOMA in New York, Musee de Tel Aviv, Israel, Bibliotheque National, Paris and also in the Musee d’art Moderne, Paris. In 1990 she received the Chevalier de La Legion d’Honneur, the French governments highest honour, for her work as a painter.
Biography: In 1943, during the second world war, Francois met Pablo Picasso, who was 40 years older then her, at a restaurant in Paris. This was to be the beginning of a ten year relationship. Her time with Picasso is covered by her book “Life with Picasso”. She was the only woman to leave the artist - much to his dismay - and she took with her the two children, Claud and Paloma. Picasso’s work during the period spent with Francoise has many portraits of her and her two children. In the 1950’s her career took off as she developed her personal style, away from the influence of Picasso and in the 1960’s she travelled to America where her works were received with great acclaim. Later in life she married Dr Jonas Salk, developer of the Polio vaccine. She continues to paint in Paris and New York and her works are in much demand.
